Devil Kazuya (often referred to as simply Devil), originally a skin for Kazuya Mishima in the original Tekken, with the exact same moves, became his own character in Tekken 2, as well as being the final boss of Tekken 2, is the reason for the creation of The Devil Gene. After Kazuya was thrown off a cliff by his father Heihachi Mishima, Kazuya made a pact with the Devil, which gave him the Devil Gene, which helped him survive. Jin Kazama, Kazuya's son, also has a Devil Gene, which was given to him by Kazuya. When the Devil Gene takes over Jin, he becomes Devil Jin. Jinpachi Mishima, Kazuya's grandfather, was also in possession of a Devil Gene, even though it wasn't the same as the original one. Since, Devil represents the evil side of Kazuya, Devil and Angel, the good side of Kazuya, are constantly fighting over control of Kazuya's soul.
Devil Kazuya will be returning in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as a playable character. The unique aspect about him in that game will be that he won't appear in the character select screen, but instead, Kazuya will be able to transform into him during battle.
