Before the original Tekken, Wang Jinrei was friends with Jinpachi Mishima, until Jinpachi was locked underneath Hon-Maru, by his son Heihachi Mishima. During Tekken, Wang Jinrei enters the original King of Iron Fist Tournament, since Heihachi is now in control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. In the tournament, Wang Jinrei fights Marshall Law, who he draws against it. During Tekken 2, Wang Jinrei teaches Heihachi's adopted son Lee Chaolan, as he wishes to defeat Kazuya Mishima, the current head of the Zaibatsu. Wang Jinrei does not appear again in a Tekken game, until Tekken 5, where he gets a note off his friend Jinpachi, telling Wang to enter the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament.
